Casemix       

Outpatients:                                                     

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Central sleep apnoea
  • Narcolepsy
  • CPAP, Non invasive Ventilation (Bi-Level therapy), Mouth piece ventilation
  • Insomnia
  • Investigation of patients with excessive daytime somnolence

Inpatients:

  • Managing patients on acute NIV (eg Hypercapnic Respiratory failure secondary to acute exacerbation of COPD)
  • Patients commencing home nocturnal NIV or Mouth piece ventilation eg Motor Neurone Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Sleep Laboratory

  • Reporting of polysomnography and other specialized sleep investigations

Training Overview

Entry requirements to Training Program

  • General Registration
  • Completion of Basic Physician Training both written and clinical components
  • Advanced Training in Thoracic Medicine or (less common) Neurology

Overview of Training Program

Advanced Training in Sleep Medicine:

  • 24 months of core sleep medicine training
  • 12 months of non-core training

Advanced Training in Respiratory Medicine:

  • 24 months of core respiratory medicine training
  • 12 months of non-core training

For dual training in Respiratory Medicine and Sleep Medicine:

  • 24 months of core respiratory medicine training
  • 12 months of core sleep medicine training
