Rotations

Each medical year is divided into five 10-12 week terms.  Interns rotate through 3 core and 2 elective terms.

Rosters

The after hours workload equates to approximately 6 weekend shifts over a 10 week term.  Interns may also be rostered to remote call.

Leave

Leave is usually allocated in 5 week blocks during an elective term.

Core terms

Core terms are mandatory rotations that must be successfully completed in order to complete your internship

1.  General Medicine  The following are accredited as core terms:

  • General Medicine
  • Thoracic Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Rehabilitation

2.  General Surgery  The following are accredited as core terms:

  • General Surgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery

3.  Emergency Medicine

  • Adult Emergency Medicine

Elective terms

Elective terms are terms accredited as suitable for intern training and can include core terms.

  • Cardiology
  • Thoracic Medicine
  • Palliative Medicine
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Rehabilitation
  • Hip Fracture
  • Mental Health
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Orthopaedics
